Truss, 46, announced her candidacy in the Daily Telegraph newspaper Sunday evening, saying she had “a clear vision of where they need to be, and the experience and resolve to get them there”. She added that she would slash taxes and maintain a tough line against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The bid by Truss followed that of former Defence Minister Penny Mordaunt, as the race expanded to 11 candidates. 

Mr. Johnson announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative party and British Prime Minister after a series of scandals and criticism from senior members of the government.

The Conservative party is expected to announce a plan for replacing Mr. Johnson this week.
